The History of North Shore Golf Club

The Architect Said It Couldn't Be Done

When government officials arrived at our Takapuna location in 1959 with plans for the Auckland Harbour Bridge, they weren't just taking our land - they were threatening to end our 28-year legacy. Most clubs would have simply closed their doors.

But our leadership team saw something different.
They saw an opportunity disguised as a crisis.

The transformation wasn't easy. We had to relocate our entire operation to Albany, manage member expectations, and rebuild from scratch. The £181,000 compensation could have been used for quick fixes, but we invested it in something revolutionary - creating New Zealand's first 27-hole golf configuration.

The Outcome - Today & Beyond

Today, NSGC attracts championship events, serves as headquarters for the North Golf Association and hosts business leaders who value tradition and innovation. That 1959 “setback” became the foundation for six decades of continued excellence.

When you step onto our fairways, you’re engaging with more than just a golf club - you’re joining a culture of transformation. A club that turned relocation into advantage, challenge into opportunity.

Whether you’re here for a casual round, a corporate golf day, or to explore membership, you’re choosing a venue grounded in heritage and engineered for excellence.
